Inspired by the ritual rice diagrams made on the thresholds of Eastern India, the Neer Ksheer coasters allude to the ability of the legendary hamsa bird to separate milk from water.
A symbol of wisdom and the vahana of Saraswati, the hamsa symbolises an evolved wise being who lives in the waters of the material world yet is untouched by it. The bird is so discerning that it consumes only pearls and has the ability to separate the good from the mundane. Hence saints in India are often referred to as paramahamsa.
As filigreed hamsas, each with a pearl in their beak, entwine to form a full blown lotus, silver fish frolic in their wings. In the centre, one sees the milk being separated from water – a true representation of “Neer Ksheer Viveka”.
