A powerfully modeled sculpture that represents a sitting image of Lord Mahavira, the historical founder of Jainism (560-480 B.C.E.). The figure, carved from soapstone of varied hues has restrained elegance and a regal presence . He has massive shoulders and a slender waist and bears the Srivasta or sacred mark, in the centre of his chest, a distinguishing symbol of Jain figures.
His ear-lobes are extended, his head is covered with short curly hair and palms folded in his lap. The form is suggestive but the legs, arms and other parts have been simplified to their essential forms of cylinders and broad planes. Stylised lions, emblem of the Tirthankar stand at his feet while a couple of deer look on as the wheel of Dharma turns for the good of all.
